You Asked, and We Listened: Site Updates!

In our continued effort to improve service, we have once again taken all of our user feedback to make some major changes to the Schoology system:

Basic and Topic Formats Have Been Combined

After receiving a number of requests to eliminate the confusion between “Basic” and “Topic” format courses, we have combined the two formats so you no longer need to choose a format. We found that teachers liked the structure that topics provided, but liked the flexibility of easily creating content from within the “Basic” format.  As a result we have merged the two formats to make everyone’s life a little bit easier.

All courses now have an “Materials” tab, where Topics, Assignments, Events, Documents, Pages, and Discussions can all be created and are automatically organized.

Teachers can quickly create any type of course content (Topics, Assignments, Events, Documents, Pages, Discussions) using the “Create Content” button in the materials tab. Assignments, Events, Documents, Pages, and Discussions can all be created independent of topics or within topics. This allows you to freely create the content you want without having to make any setup decisions.

Creating Topics Has Been Simplified

Schoology Secures $1.25 Million Series A Funding

Schoology (www.schoology.com), a cloud-based learning management system and configurable social network for academic institutions, has secured its first institutional round of venture capital funding from Meakem Becker Venture Capital, following a successful angel investment from a prominent New York investor in May 2009.  Glen Meakem and Alan Veeck of Meakem Becker will be joining the Schoology board. Schoology will use the funding to expand its workforce and grow its service.

Schoology leverages the familiarity of popular social media tools to improve communication and collaboration inside and outside of the classroom.  In particular, Schoology provides a full suite of learning management tools, including an online gradebook, attendance, test/quizzes, discussion boards, blogs, homework dropboxes, and collaborative course and group pages. The social network permits cross-school networking allowing for multiple organizations to participate in shared classes, groups, and discussions.

“As the popularity of social media continues to grow, we are committed to bringing these same technologies into the classroom by creating a safe and secure academic environment,” said Jeremy Friedman, founder and CEO of Schoology. “Our goal is to create a fun and engaging tool that students and teachers are already familiar with using, while eliminating cost as a barrier to adoption.”…

Site Maintenance

In our continued effort to improve our service, we will be performing scheduled maintenance at
1:00 AM EDT, Thursday, April 29 to upgrade our servers. Schoology will be unavailable for up to two hours while the upgrade is performed.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

On the State of Ning and Education

  1. The recent news that Ning will no longer be offering their free social networks for free is unfortunate.
  2. The news that they are forcing existing users to either pay or leave instead of just charging new customers is unsettling, especially for educators and academic institutions who have spent months migrating from their existing systems over to Ning, who had promised free social networking.
  3. Facts 1 and 2 combined with their lack of an open API is even more troublesome.

At first glance, Ning was an olive branch to innovative educators: a free network in exchange for occasional advertisements.  Adopters soon learned that because of the advertisements, the domain was being blocked by many school networks.

It is no surprise that Ning’s free advertising-backed model could not support it. Most of today’s biggest free services (such as Facebook, Twitter) use advertising as a supplement to additional revenue streams, and others (such as SurveyMonkey) do not rely on ads at all.

Although there were many holes in today’s educational web 2.0 offerings that were filled by Ning’s services, one simple fact remains:

Ning was not created for education.

That is why it was blocked on…

Site Update – Topics

We have spent the past few weeks developing the ability for teachers to manage courses through a topic based format. This is a major change to the Schoology system and we are excited to announce its release!

Teachers can now choose between a basic format or topic based format for their course. The basic format is the default setting that organizes assignments, documents and pages into a ‘Materials’ tab. For a topic based format, this tab is replaced with a ‘Topics’ tab. Assignments, documents and pages are now created within a topic along with events and discussion threads

Creating a Topic

When creating a topic, users can choose to create a ‘Simple Topic’ or an ‘Advanced Topic.’ A simple topic has a standard format which consists of a description field followed by any assignments, documents, pages, events or discussion threads that have been added to the topic.

An advanced topic has a rich-text editor that allows users to fully customize the content and place assignments, documents, pages, events or discussion threads directly inline with the text.

Changes to be aware of

If you change a pre-existing course’s format, there are changes that you will need to be aware of. When

Site Update – Lots of New Features

Over the past couple months we have been working hard to make it as simple as possible for new users to get their schools setup and running on Schoology. During this process, we created some great tools for school administrators allowing them to fully customize the system to meet their needs. We have also built great new features for teachers to make their lives even easier.

New Administrative Controls

  • School administrators can now customize user roles and turn on/off any feature on the site based on role
  • A new ‘Users’ area has been created allowing admins to bulk edit all users within their system
  • Import/Export capabilities are now available for courses, enrollments and users (supports CSV or XLS file types)
  • The user activation area now allows admins to print activation information for students by course
  • There is now a district interface for district admins to control/create multiple schools
  • Single Sign On is now available for school admins to setup on their own following the instructions provided in the ‘Integration’ area
  • Usernames can now be set for each user

Other New Features

  • Teachers can now reuse old assignments, events, documents and gradebook settings using the ‘Import

Site Update – New Layout and Features

Happy Holidays!

Over the past couple of weeks we have been working hard to improve the navigation and ease of performing common tasks throughout Schoology. Additionally, we are planning to roll out a variety of new features and functionality throughout the upcoming weeks.

Recent Changes:

  • A new look to increase usability and keep the layout clean; common actions are now grouped and represented by a gear icon
  • Moving of “Blogs” from the left navigation bar to the top navigation bar to properly group social and academic elements
  • Grouping of assignments into grading periods
  • Creation, administration, and distribution of an assessment (test/quiz) – Beta
    • This can be enabled by selecting the option “Enable assessment” under the “Advanced options” either when creating an assignment, or viewing an assignment profile
    • Students are not able to view/take the assessment until the “Availability” has been set via the assessment “Settings”
    • Detailed instructions and a video tutorial will be available next week

Upcoming Features & Functionality:

  • Lectures (learning modules) – Development of pages, lessons, or packages which can be combined to create a learning module (more details to follow)
  • In-browser chat, as well as chatrooms (controlled by the school settings)

Course, Group & Personal Calendars

We have released full version calendars for courses, groups and individual users. The personal calendar for an individual user is synced with course and group calendars to provide an aggregate view of all events or assignments. Users can also create personal events in their calendar.

All calendar events are color-coded for easy recognition – course events are orange, group events are green, and personal events are blue.

Personal calendar month view

The upcoming feed on the homepage will now display upcoming course events, group events as well as personal events.
